Vigil

Privacy policy

Last updated 10 October 2026

This policy explains what Vigil, operated by Tanmay Surte (“we”), collects, why, and how long we keep it. It is written to meet India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

What we collect about you

What we collect about other people

Vigil stores public posts that mention your brand, such as posts on X, Reddit, YouTube, Instagram and Hacker News: the text (up to 1,000 characters), the link, the author's public name and follower count, and engagement counts. We never collect private messages, private groups or deleted posts.

The free checker

The free checker does not need an account. We keep a one-way hash of your IP address for up to 2 days to limit abuse, and cache answers for 7 days. Results are shown only to you and are never published.

You can see and correct your data in Settings, and delete your account there at any time; deletion is immediate and we email you when it's done. For anything else, write to our grievance officer, Tanmay Surte, at hello@getvigil.in. We reply within 7 days.

If you appear in a post

If a public post of yours appears in a brand's Vigil account and you want it removed, email hello@getvigil.in with the link.
